Copywriting tips for April 2007
The Easter eggs are piling up on top of the kitchen cupboards and the kids are practicing their rock climbing skills in a bid to reach the mountain of chocolate before Easter Sunday.
One advantage is that they will probably need some help from mum and dad if they are going to munch their way through what looks like the entire stock from the Cadbury’s factory shop before the selection boxes appear again at Christmas – it’s a dirty job but someone has to do it!
Anyway, fuelled by chocolate, it’s time for this month’s hints and tips section. Due to popular request over the next few months, we will be taking a look at SEO copy; what it is; why you need it; and how to write it.
Follow the guidelines and hopefully your website will start to shoot up the search engine rankings.
As always, if there are any areas of copywriting that you would like us to look at in more detail, email the subject or your questions and queries to info@cwrite.co.uk and we’ll address them in this section.
SEO copywriting - the art of writing for search engines - Part 1: What is SEO copy?
What is SEO Copy?
SEO copy or ‘Search Engine Optimised’ copy is text that is written with the specific aim of ensuring that your website achieves a high-ranking position with the major search engines.
Why is SEO copy necessary?
Imagine that you live in Chester and want a mini-bus taxi service to take you to Manchester airport for your holidays.
You might well log onto Google or Yahoo or one of the other search engines and key in a phrase that you think will provide you with a list of taxi services in the local region – perhaps ‘Minibus taxis in Chester’.
The search engine will trawl through registered sites, looking through headings and text on thousands of websites for words that most closely match the search phrase. The more matches it finds, and the closer the words to the actual phrase, the higher the website will rank in the results.
Admittedly, this is an oversimplification of the process as there are technical aspects that can affect the search as well as links to and from your site, number of hits and so on. But it is essentially the reason why SEO copywriting is important and necessary if you want customers to find your site via search engines.
What is different about SEO copy?
SEO copy is a marriage of writing for the audience and writing for the search engines. And, like any good marriage, there must be compromise on both sides to achieve the optimum result.
How do you write SEO copy?
That is the question that we will be answering over the coming months. Which is my cue to bid you farewell for April and see you in May.
