Copywriting tips for August 2006

This month we've a few common copywriting errors. See if you can spot the mistakes before checking the answers:

  1. McArthur Stores have moved to new premises.
  2. Johnson and Son Ltd - the family firm that care.
  3. Our company is proud of it's excellent customer service record.
  4. With a wealth of experience in Market Research, Design and Public Relations, David Jenkins has been appointed Marketing Director of Johnson and Son Ltd.

Answers

  1. The text refers to one company called 'McArthur Stores' so this should read:

McArthur Stores has moved to new premises.

  2. Again the text refers to a single 'family firm', so the sentence should read:

Johnson and Son Ltd - the family firm that cares

  3. If you're unsure about apostrophes, there are several books on the subject that may help, see our copywriting links section for more information. "It's" denotes "it is", so in the example the statement should read:

Our company is proud of its excellent customer service record.

  4. For some reason people think that certain words should begin with a capital letter. Although you might think that a capital letter emphasises a word, in reality it just makes the sentence look more complicated and harder to read.

Also, it is no longer necessary to give job titles capital letters. Check out any newspaper and you'll see what we mean. The sentence looks much easier to read when written as follows:

With a wealth of experience in market research, design and public relations, David Jenkins has been appointed marketing director of Johnson and Son Ltd.
